Individual therapy at Mind Body Healing Center is one-on-one talk therapy with a licensed clinician, focused on a specific concern you’re working through — anxiety, depression, a life transition, relationship difficulty, or a pattern you want to change. Sessions run 60 minutes. You can meet in person at our Holmdel office or, if you’re outside New Jersey, by telehealth.
Individual therapy fits best when you’re dealing with something specific enough to work through with one clinician, one-on-one — as opposed to medication management (which focuses on psychiatric medication) or couples counseling (which involves two people in the room).
Your first session is an intake: your clinician will ask about what brought you in, your history, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. It’s less about solving anything on day one and more about your clinician understanding your situation clearly enough to build a plan with you — most first sessions run the full 60 minutes and focus on history and goals rather than jumping straight into treatment. From there, you and your clinician agree on a frequency (commonly weekly or every other week to start) and revisit that as things progress.
looks at the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behavior. It's structured and present-focused — you and your clinician identify specific thought patterns that are driving distress (for example, catastrophizing or all-or-nothing thinking) and work on practical ways to shift them. CBT tends to be a good fit when you want concrete tools for a specific problem, like anxiety or a phobia.
takes a longer, more exploratory approach, looking at how past experiences — often from childhood or earlier relationships — shape your current patterns, emotions, and reactions. It's less structured than CBT and typically unfolds over a longer course of treatment, aimed at deeper insight rather than a specific short-term fix.
A standard individual therapy session is 60 minutes. See the full breakdown, including shorter follow-up options, on the pricing page.

Individual therapy isn’t crisis care. If you’re in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room — don’t wait for a scheduled appointment. Individual therapy also isn’t a substitute for medication management if what you primarily need is psychiatric medication evaluation; see Medication Management for that.
There’s no fixed timeline — it depends on what you’re working on and which approach you’re using. CBT is often shorter and more goal-focused; psychoanalysis is typically a longer-term process. Your clinician will discuss realistic expectations with you directly.
Most people start weekly or every other week. Your clinician will recommend a frequency based on your situation and adjust it as you progress.
Yes, with the standard legal exceptions that apply to all therapy (for example, imminent risk of harm to yourself or others). Your clinician will go over this with you at your first session.
Individual therapy is talk therapy — working through a concern with a clinician session by session. Medication management is a separate service focused specifically on evaluating and managing psychiatric medication. Many patients use both together; see Medication Management for details.
